So you're in the mid 50's, it's summer, enjoying life, and then people are disappearing...What's the worst that could happen?

Beach House: By R.L Stine

A review by Willie Fowler

Summary of the first chapters. With the removal of many spoilers.

~~~.+**+.~~~
Picture this: It's the Summer of 1956, school just got out, and new hits like "Sh-Boom" just dropped on the radio. You go out to the beach in an old convertible with the crash-resistance of a Pringle, and hang out with your friends. We have Maria, Amy, Ronnie, Stuart, and...Buddy. I don't mean to judge, but I always thought that "Buddy" was sort of an odd name for someone.
Maria is our lead, with black, silky hair, never gone steady with someone.
Amy, who is curiously described to be mouse-like, going steady with Ronnie,
Ronnie, an annoying jokester character whose pranks lean more towards needless cruelty,
Stuart, the cool kid. Or, really tries hard to be. He's the guy with the heavily, and I mean heavily applied gel in his ducktail hairstyle.
and then Buddy. Good looking, but described as 'intense,' 'very serious,' and 'square.' Competes with Stuart to be Maria's boyfriend. Lives in the Beach House, but it always seems empty.
Now that we have your 1950's era friend group, Buddy gets 'pantsed' and then left in the ocean. The boys all guffaw and taunt him for being 'square' as the girls both feel sympathetic for him. The boys convince Maria and Amy to leave him nude in the water...and they do (pretty jerky, hm?) Surely nothing, absolutely nothing will come of it, eh?
[and then spoilery stuff happened.
...
moving on,]
Now, this may seem weird, but, we're hopping on over to the Summer of 1994.
We've got Ashley, with silver hair, green eyes, conventionally attractive
Ross, in an unhealthy relationship with Ashley (seriously, like break up.)
Lucy, who has red curly hair and blue eyes, also conventionally attractive
and Kip. A "tough looking townie" with 0 sense of humor and bullies Lucy who still sticks around him
Not much happens here (that isn't spoilery), other than Ashley noting that the Beach House is still there with nobody in it, and she claims they need to just demolish the old place. OH, BUT SUDDENLY!
[Sike, it's just more spoilers.
...
moving on again]
Review:
Beach House is one of my first horror reads in a LOOOOONG while, and I gotta say, I'm enjoying getting back into horror novels. I was also planning on buying Koji Suzuki's "Ringu" novel, which inspired a Japanese 1998 movie, then the sequels, then the American remake, the American sequels, and...I'm going off tangent.
Beach House, written by the O.G of American horror novels: R.L Stine, or Robert Lawrence Stine is probably a favorite Stine novel of mine as of late.
Beach House is full of mind-boggling twists and some pretty surprising climax and falling action material.
I can safely say that I was very much NOT expecting a couple of these twists, such as
[REDACTED]
and
[SPOILERS]
Oh and especially
[NOPE]
In case you haven't gotten the memo, this novel has some twists about as unexpected as Purple Hibiscus' twist, maybe even more so, and as such, I don't want to give any spoilers whatsoever considering how well everything comes together by the end of the story, leaving you like "OH that makes sense!"
This is Willie Fowler, see you in 4 weeks!
  1. Wow, all I got out of that were a group of teenagers going to the beach for fun and horror stuff happens. I had to scroll for 5 minutes because of all the spacing. I will probably never touch this book, as horror stuff and especially in the 1950's. Nope! Good job.
  2. Great post, Willie! I love how you drew out the summary using formatting and suspense--it made it extremely interesting to read. I'm not a fan of horror, but I like the idea of setting the book in the 50s and 90s. Overall, excellent post and nice job putting your voice into it by redacting spoilers!
  4. Great post Willie! I also love the part when [REDACTED]. You did a great job reviewing this Stine horror book in your own unique way, and reading it was quite enjoyable. I also love R.L Stine's books and will definitely be reading this one. Keep up the good work!
  5. Great post, Willie! I think out of all the methods I've seen to entice me to read a book, yours worked the best. My mind is filled with questions, and I need to find out what those twists you mentioned are. I haven't gotten into the horror genre much yet, so maybe this is a good start...
  6. THIS WAS SUCH A GOOD BLOG! The format of the blog got me hooked from the start. This will definitely be an edge-of-the-sit read and probably not a 3 am read. I am a pretty big fan of horror and this book definitely hits all of my interests. Again, this was such a fun blog to read. Good job Willie!
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone Book Review (in honor of the movie's 20th anniversary!)
 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone: In grand celebration of the Movie adaptations 20th anniversary, I thought that it would be somewhat appropriate to reflect on the first ever Harry Potter book: Sorcerer's (or Philosopher's) Stone! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Spoilers The story follows the lovable, ever iconic Harry Potter: As a baby, he lost his parents to "You-Know-Who," an evil and powerful wizard, but lived when he struck him with a spell, leaving a lightning bolt shaped scar on his head. He's delivered to his closest relatives the Dursleys: Aunt Petunia, Uncle Vernon, and Cousin Dudley.  He's raised in their house as sort of a lesser being who's inferior to the rest of the family. This stems from the fact that he has magical heritage, which would harm the Dursley's appearance of being completely, totally, wholly normal. He's forced into staying in a dusty cupboard und...
Assassination Classroom by Yusei Matsui. "Slice of Life-y Action Manga where a ragtag team of underperforming students attempt to kill teacher who is also a deadly alien."
 暗殺教室 (Assassination Classroom) A Manga by Yusei Matsui, Review by Willie Fowler (Yes, this guy is what is constantly drawn on the Chalk Boards) For some background,  Assassination Classroom is a manga written by Yusei Matsui from 2012 to 2016 that gained enough popularity to have an anime produced for it in Late December of 2013, and a...so-so movie. It's chapters were being published to Japan's No. 1 best selling magazine from Shueisha: "Weekly Shonen Jump" from the start of July in 2012 to the middle of March in 2016. The chapters were collected and put into 21 volumes a few months down the line, releasing in November of 2012 and concluding in July of 2016. Weekly Shonen Jump currently holds the undying One Piece ( CHAPTER 1  CAME OUT IN 1997 AND IT STILL HAS CHAPTERS NOW ), The "quirky"  My Hero Academia , Jujutsu Kaisen, and more. Though now no longer running as of now, many well known manga in pop-culture such as Naruto, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, ...
