Book review – Jordan Irvin
The way I used to be Amber Smith
TRIGGER WARNING - SA
The way I used to be was an emotional rollercoaster. This book is centered around 14-year-old girl Eden. This book was quite easy to read considering it was split into four parts. (Freshman, sophomore, junior, senior) Eden was known as a nice “pure” girl by almost everyone she knew. She saw herself this way until one night. Eden has an older brother, and his friend sexually assaulted Eden during the summer before her first year at high school. Not only did that negatively emotionally and mentally impact Eden, but it also changed her as a person drastically and created a huge rift between her and her family, especially her brother. Going into high school, Eden has new hair that catches everyone’s attention but that’s the littlest thing that changed about her. Eden meets a junior boy (14/17), lies about her age (16), and starts dating him. That’s the major event in freshman year. Something major happens in each section/year of her life. I would/ wouldn’t recommend this book; it does talk about very uncomfortable and triggering topics. However, the book also shows the ups and downs of high school like struggling with grades, friends, and extracurriculars. This book also doesn’t have a happy ending in my opinion. Eden never tells anyone. However, I think that the way I used is sadly very realistic and there’s no way for it to have a happy ending because Eden will never be the same. Overall, I give the book an 8/10. It was written well and interesting. I wish that I knew what happened after Eden graduated, that would make this book a 10/10.
Really good book review! I agree with you that it is probably realistic for Eden to never tell anyone, although true. Sadly, so many sa are not reported. I like how you gave your opinion of the book throughout the whole review. Good job!
ReplyDeleteThis was a great review! I enjoyed how you talked about how you felt throughout the book and also how you talked about the structure of the novel. Sadly this story seams very realistic and hard to read in some ways. Great job! - Claire Hobson
