Exile is the second book in the Keeper of the Lost Cities series by Shannon Messenger. The book starts off with the main character of the series Sophie Foster having nightmares of the kidnapping that took place during the first book. She got kidnapped by a group of elves that drugged and nearly killed her and her best friend Dex. Sophie, Dex, Grady (her adopted elf parent along with Edaline), Keefe, Fitz, and Biana (some of her really close friends that she met in the elf world) go to find a Yeti. This was an experience that Sophie was experiencing for the first time and was having a good time. Instead of finding a Yeti, however, she finds an even rarer find, a female alicorn.
When Sophie starts Firefox Academy (a school for elves) she finds a locket that she thinks is from Grady and Edaline but it’s actually from a mysterious organization called The Black Swan, who created Sophie. Alden, a very important figure to Sophie, tells Sophie to come with him on a very important and secretive mission. Sophie barely survives with a sane mind but she suddenly sees a vision with a Black swan with a girl recognized as Jolie ( Grady and Edaline dead daughter), she then follows the Black swan but is suddenly pulled by Alden.
When they escape it is found that Alden has lost his sanity and can’t do anything. To restore his sanity Sophie with her friends try to go find the black swan to help Alden. The story then explains their dangerous mission with many obstacles.
This book is amazing as it has so much thrill, adventure, and is also at times really funny. Although it is fictional, the story does have some great themes and lessons. I think a big theme about this story is how an anomaly, Sophie in this case, fits in with a whole new world (literally). I have gone to many different schools during elementary school. I found it kind of difficult to fit into different environments, a lot like Sophie. This is one of the many reasons why this book particularly interests me. The way Shannon Messenger shows this throughout the first two books in this series is amazing. The humorous factor by Keefe and Dex also adds a great touch. The fact that the black swan is mentioned so much in this novel and we still don’t know anything about them shows how much mystery is in this book. The way Shannon Messenger explains the world that Sophie is a part of, and the creatures are also superb. Overall, if you like adventure, a lot of thrill and humor I strongly recommend this book. I will definitely be finishing this series.

The summary of the book is nicely informative, and I like how you mention that the book includes some comedy because that gave me an even larger understanding of what the book really is. ReplyDeleteYour summary of the plot was very good. However, I also agree with Claire. What made you want to read this book? How did you relate with the characters as well as their experiences? Overall, great job, but maybe make the plot more concise and add more reflection.
ReplyDeleteThis book reminds me when I think life is a dream and it feels so distorted. Reading the summary gave me chills. Though you didn't mention what motivated you to read, the summary you wrote already pulled me in with the thriller and storyline. The review was very detailed and picked the main point of the book.
